resume From 1961 till 1965 I lived in Amsterdam in the house of the painter Joop Sjollema, where my passion for painting was revived. In 1966 I started drawing and painting.

I worked for UNESCO, for DHV Consulting Engineers and for Utrecht University mainly as developmental expert especially in the Third World.

I started making portraits in 1967 and I still do.

My free work shows a slow evolution from figurative towards abstract

My wife and I owned and ran an art gallery in the city of Nijmegen.

The Paris based painter Joce Ciuha influenced me and made me use more vivid colours.

Artists Statement

My motivation

Painting means to me the search for an extra dimension in life and this search is not without danger: the danger that a painting definitively fails, that the extra dimension doesn’t show or refuses to be captured in paint, that my pretensions appear void.

Painting and drawing mean to me also the effort to get into contact with the accidental. There is the accident of lines, spaces and colours which together may produce something unforeseen which might be useful.

I search for what there is to discover inside me and what can be used on the canvas with the risk of finding nothing. My work is essentially about space, structure and colour. The title forms an integral part of the work and should not predispose the viewer.

Painting is to be present at a creative process, an activity in which I myself have a say. The process happens partly outside my influence but I am the initiator and bear the final responsibility. My signature on the canvas (or on the reverse side if it doesn’t fit in the picture) proves this and makes me accountable. Mumbled curses, soft humming and silent despair alternate while I work.

Finally, when the painting is “finished” there is the fortuitous encounter between an unknown viewer, perhaps not even born yet, and my work. By the way, a painting or drawing needs at least one observer without which it isn’t sure whether it exists at all.

I am satisfied when my work evokes something, triggers daydreams, emotions or thoughts.

Dealing with danger when painting is comparable to travelling: the thrill is there when you are doing it but the joy evaporates once you arrive at your destination.
