Artists Statement
Defying Gravity Series
The sensuous qualities of applying paint have held me spellbound from the first time I painted. Over the course of my career, I have explored many different modes of expression: realistic and political themes, color, texture and pure geometric themes. At present my work can be described as abstractions and narratives involved with motion, turmoil and improbable situations that express my unrest about how humans want to control nature. My paintings create a visual whirlwind defying gravity.
I work with acrylics and oil sticks, building up the surface in many layers. I apply paint with sponge brushes, printmaking brayers, stamps and brushes. To add surface texture and imagery I sometimes add collage elements. Using a variety of acrylic mediums to change the consistency of the paint I achieve a surface that ranges from dry and brittle to creamy, glossy or almost liquid.
Biographical Narrative
Jane Dell was born in New York City and studied art at the High School of Music and Art, Art Students League and Pratt Institute. Many people have influenced her recent work, but her painting/printmaking professor from Pratt Institute, Jack Sonnenberg, instilled a love and respect for art history and the creative process that has remained with her to this day.
Jane lived and worked in New York all of her life until she relocated eleven years ago to Maplewood , New Jersey . Her work has been selected for many group and solo shows in New Jersey and New York , including City Without Walls Gallery, Montclair State University Gallery, 1978 Gallery in Maplewood , Kling Gallery in Montclair , New Jersey and the Creative Center Gallery located at 147 West 26 th St. , NYC
